Those shrimp tacos were haunting me. "Come back, have us again..." So as my will power had faded to a trickle, we ventured to Betos despite the traffic, despite the construction. As I knew what would only stop the voices i threw my order at my husband without hesitation. when they arrived, Uncooked, Uncleaned shrimp arrived in place of the amazing dish I had once received. So turned off by the black vein staring at me through the back of my barely warm shrimp. No avocado. Let me repeat that..NO Avocado! What? I ate only the rice and beans, and with a heavy heart, left. Unsatisfied, sad, and pissed off. So maybe the good cook has a couple week days off. Not only was all the food different, but even the kids were unhappy. A removal of 1 1/2 Pumpkins.

a lil mexican
Voted the best Mexican restaurant at least twice, this unassuming building uncased in a parking lot of 15 (give or take) gives little away about what lies inside. Hardly a smell escapes that i can catch other than an occasional customer. Once inside the over the top menu carries a load. So many things to tempt the most routine. The brain tacos were not my cup of tea, but something caught my attention right off the bat. Displayed in a picture suited for the MET, hot and fresh as the beach shrimp fajitas. Holla!
A word about Jaritos, if you haven't tried them...DO! Carbonated enough to choke you, make you cry and burn your tongue in one taste, these Mexican sodas are the BOMB. The only thing to cure "way too much hot sauce". Exotic flavors and some your recognise, were purchased to enjoy with our meal. We made our way out side to a less crowded point of view.
A small concrete patio with interesting concrete table and chairs, a view was being kind, we happen upon Betos right when the whole other side of the street was being remodeled. Also be ware, the pigeons there are far too bold! And too many of them.
Our food was brought out hot and fresh. (15min.) The shrimp fajitas, glorious. The shrimp still had a crunch to them, and the vegetables were the same. accompanied by beans and rice, and corn tortillas, avocado and a home made hot sauce. The seasoning was on key, light and healthy, hardly any oil. Heaven. My husband ordered carne asada tacos, cheese casedilla, and a carne asada torta. (forgive my horrible spanish spelling) I could not help it, the animal with in came a calling and i helped myself to a bite of each. And you know what? They all had different flavor. each item stood out on its own, and each one was delicious. The price was affordable to boot, all that for around $35.
I have been to Mexico, and Betos food took me right back. A small place with something to say.

A Breakfast Joint
Time and time again I have driven by someplace new and never stopped in to satisfy my curiosity. As I waved the red flag across my husbands face, War declared in my eyes, the car came to a halt. Triumphantly my heart danced as he was going to take a risk and jump head first into uncharted goodness.
The Hog Wild Cafe. Located in quiet Sparks, came to inhabit the dwelling of a famous pancake joint, and with a less than thrilling sign, was going to be Take Down central. Starved and ready we calmly bombard thru the glass doors and are taken back with shock.
The Hog so proudly displayed on the center counter, in the center of the door way, in the center of your eye line, looked familiar. Being fans of the great Nuggett Rib Cookoff, we know our hogs, and this one was like a big hairy Wilber. BJ's Barbecue Co. A great hero to the sport, they have now turned to breakfast? HOLLA!
Excited to see whats on the slab, a very friendly but a little over dressed, greeter seats us quickly. The menu, small but intriguing. Items like burgers, salads, eggs and just in between. Unable to decide what to nosh, I opt for a burger with jalapenos and a cherry barbecue sauce. My husband, breakfast. A tea plate size, thick and crunchy chicken fried steak, eggs, home potatoes in white gravy.
The wait. Tic toc. tic toc. Was long and long. 35 minutes. Granted the place was almost full, and our waitress was a bit ignoring, it was LONG! I half gave up, until out of the corner i see our girl, gliding on air with plates a bountiful. Whith convicti9n of a woman at the brink, I dive in. Now as I look up My husbands face glows with happiness, and as I glance down notice an eye lash inside my bun atop a softened onion. MMM, nothing screams lovin like DNA. That did not detour me, all grossness removed (thoroughly), I let the devouring commence. The burger was good, i would have liked more heat ( I have a high tolerance) and more cherry sauce could barely taste it. The fries, well they were sad and limp, reminded me of thew art of Tim Burton.
My husband was kind, and full, enough to give me a little taste of everything. WOW! Everything was great. Everything. The best gravy, home made peppered bacon, steak I have ever had. I am becoming a huge fan already. Price, about average. total bill about $30. I recommend stopping her and fill the tank. They make sure you walk away full.

Dinner Time
The first place graced with my presence, as well as my wallet, The Eldorado's Buffet. Nestled in the heart of down town Reno between the new and old, stands The Eldorado's casino. A long time staple of our fair city, has brought new life with the addition of their newest flavors. A great place to gamble, if your into that, and plenty of night life- before and after parties. I have been to this buffet before but will restrain from adding any previous opinions gained.
Parking in their well worn in parking garage, almost packed to the brim, was an adventure in its self. Its small and out dated for today's vehicles. The elevator was easy to find, and a quick and scenic ride to our destination. Newly remolded and pleasing to the eye, the inside was a happening site on this Friday night. The Buffet is beautiful, stone covered walls and an Italian color scheme greet you as you wait to be seated. Fridays and Saturdays are seafood night, so the price does reflect such. $24 a person did not keep me away, for the mounds of crab, shrimp, and desserts called my name.
The wait was typical, about 25 minutes to pay and be seated. It is after all tourist season. That said my hopes were high knowing that in order to keep the tourists coming back, they would have to be on their A game. While you wait for a table the lovingly have you stand not 10 feet from fresh Italian. Pasta, Pizza and Prosciutto..OH MY!
Once seated you are free to ravage and pillage your guts out. We have a system in my home, Detail! My husband and I take turns, one person is on Detail while the other gets a plate for themselves. It was my turn, and Detail mean get the largest plate you can find and fill it to bursting with crab to share. But don't forget the butter (for him) and lemon juice (for me). After my Detail is complete i then proceed to gather a plate for myself of prime rib, steak, shrimp and sole.
A Game they were, the crab was out of this world. Firm and salt free, no fishy smell or previously frozen after burn. Fresh and Delicious! The star had taken center stage and was greeted with applause from all around. The prim rib, not to be forgotten, tender and juicy. The steaks each cooked to the palate of every guest, ranging from medium rare to well. A variety of delights from around, smoothies at the salad bar, their famous mushroom pasta, a must try every time, and a version of gelato at the desserts. I filled myself to the eyes and waddled home completely satisfied.
But a word about the staff, accommodating and generically friendly, but not on top of things as they should have been. Which is why I always order two drinks at the start. By the way, apple juice and crab don't taste too well together. I learned the hard way, stick to soda or tea. Yuck.
All things considered, I give it 3 1/2 Pumpkins.

Howdy
Welcome one and all to my Blog. After some consideration, and a FAIL or two, I have decided to write a blog about the one thing that unites us all. The thing that we dedicate tv shows, magazines, and schools to the higher education of such greatness. FOOD! The joyous rapture of a satisfying meal resting in our bellies, the beauty of eyes glazed over while shyly we unbutton our pants. That is what its all about. I fancy myself, as others do, a connoisseur of sorts. Able to appreciate, eloquently devour, and stomach a variety of sustenance's. Now by no means am i a professional critic, chef or baker. I am simply a woman with a broad palate and a policy to be brutally honest. As well as a major hunger only to be satisfied by something unique. In the pages to come i will visit the over 300 restaurants in my home town of Reno Nevada. I shall upload pictures and opinions, ratings and value of each place visited in hopes to help others find something new and exciting to enjoy.
